London first, then the circle around it
London's housing is older, denser and more varied than anywhere else the trade works. A single street can hold a Georgian house split into four flats, a 1930s mansion block with a communal boiler, a post-war council block with shared risers and a new-build with a plant room in the basement. The plumbing and heating in each is different, and so is the way a job is done: where the stopcock is, who has to approve the flue, which wall the pipes can run in, whether the drain is shared with the neighbour. Around the city the coverage is a circle roughly twenty miles across, with the base town at its centre. Inside it are the inner boroughs with their terraces and mansion blocks, the interwar suburbs, the post-war estates and the market towns beyond the North Circular and the South Circular. Every one of the heating and plumbing services is available across the whole circle, from a leaking tap to a full central heating system, and the busiest calls are the same everywhere: boiler breakdowns in winter, landlord gas certificates all year round, and blocked drains in the older streets where the pipework under the pavement is Victorian.
Engineers are routed by area, so a morning in the north does not end with a van stuck on the South Circular, and parking, permits and controlled zones are dealt with as a matter of course. How far out of London do you go?
Roughly twenty miles from the centre in every direction, which takes in every town listed on this page, from Watford and St Albans in the north to Redhill and Leatherhead in the south, Grays in the east and Staines in the west.
My town is in the list. Is it covered in the same way as London?

Do you charge more for the outer towns?
